CityCatalyst is a project from Open Earth, a non-profit on a mission to speed up climate action through open digital tools. We bring together science, technology, and big-picture thinking to build the kind of infrastructure the world needs to tackle climate change, collaboratively, and at scale.
VISIT Open earthHelp cities implement impactful climate projects by simplifying how they collect, manage, and apply data -all the way through to financed projects on the ground.
A world where every city, regardless of size or resources, can easily access the tools to go from data to climate action -radically faster, for a more resilient future.
They generate over 70% of global emissions, yet often lack the tools, resources, and data to act effectively.
Inventories take months, data is messy or missing, and access to finance requires evidence that many local teams can’t produce.
We believe cities are critical climate actors. That’s why we built CityCatalyst.
CityCatalyst was born from the OpenClimate initiative and the urgent need to support the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake through advanced, nested climate accounting. By mapping the progress on commitments, we realized Cities had the highest data gaps, compared to countries and companies. Why? It turns out there weren’t very good tools. We set out to build an open, scalable platform that simplifies how cities develop and track their emissions inventories aligned with global standards. We quickly realized impact is not just about inventories, assessing climate risks, planning and financing impactful actions and projects on the ground is critical. To ensure a global reach, CityCatalyst was designed for cities of all sizes and capacities:
- Built with local realities in mind, not just technical perfection
- Open by default, easy to integrate with existing tools
- Scalable for both individual cities and national or regional programs
While CityCatalyst emerged from collaboration between climate scientists, software developers, data engineers and local practitioners, it now continues to grow through partnerships with city networks, consultants, data publishers and nations worldwide.Collaboration and interoperability is at the core of how we do our work, so if you are developing an impactful tool or dataset for cities, let us know how we can integrate your tool into our cities' journey to maximize synergy.
We’re a global, multidisciplinary team combining climate science and technology expertise to support and accelerate local climate action worldwide.
Our team includes: Climate scientists, Policy experts, Product managers, Software engineers & Data specialists, UX Researchers & Local government collaborators, Marketing strategists & Partnership builders
